Why Play Therapy is Really, Really Stupid

Why Play Therapy is Really, Really Stupid

Who am I to think that one hour a week with me will create change in a child who is with their parents for the other 167 hours? Here's why family therapy works better.

The Math Problem

  • 1 hour per week with therapist
  • 167 hours per week with family
  • Which environment has more influence?

The Play Therapy Fantasy

Play therapy assumes:

  • Children will magically transfer insights from play to real life
  • Parents don't need to change
  • The child is the problem
  • One hour can overcome 167 hours of dysfunction

What Actually Happens

  • Child may feel better temporarily
  • No real change at home
  • Parents remain frustrated
  • Problems persist or get worse
  • Everyone blames the child for "not trying"

Why Family Therapy Works

Addresses the Real Issues:

  • Parenting inconsistencies
  • Communication problems
  • Family stress and conflict
  • Boundary issues
  • Behavioral patterns

Creates Lasting Change:

  • Parents learn new skills
  • Family dynamics improve
  • Changes happen where child lives
  • Everyone participates in solutions

The Therapist's Ego Problem

Many therapists want to be the "savior" who fixes the child. But real change happens in families, not in therapy offices.

When Play Therapy Might Help:

  • Processing specific trauma
  • Severe anxiety or depression
  • As part of family therapy
  • When parents are doing their part

The Bottom Line

If I see a child for play therapy while ignoring the family system, I'm essentially performing therapeutic malpractice. The family is where the problem lives, and it's where the solution must live too.

You can't change a child without changing the family system they return to every day.
