Our approach to teens & young adults therapy

The teen and young-adult years are structurally hard: identity is forming, relationships are more complex, academics and social pressure stack up, and the skills to handle it all are still being built. We take that seriously.

Our approach with teens is direct, real, and not condescending. We don't do sticker charts or therapy-speak. We work on the actual stuff: friendships, family dynamics, anxiety, school pressure, substance experimentation, who they're becoming.

When a teen is in therapy, parents are usually involved too, not as the problem but as part of the system. We alternate between individual and family sessions where that fits, and we'll tell you plainly when we think parents need to shift something.

Common questions about teens & young adults therapy

Will you tell my parents what I say? +
We protect the therapy relationship. For most topics what you share stays between us. There are specific safety situations (active harm to self or others) where we'd involve parents, and we'd tell you directly if that were happening. We'll explain the specifics at our first session.
My teen says they don’t want therapy. Is it still worth trying? +
Often yes. Reluctance is normal. We’ve worked with plenty of teens who showed up skeptical and stayed because they felt actually heard. The first session is a trial run for both sides.
Do you work with college-age young adults? +
Yes. The transition out of the house, into college, into first jobs and first serious relationships, is a major part of what we work on. We can do in-person or telehealth depending on where the young adult is.
