How to Raise a Juvenile Delinquent (And Why You Shouldn't)
This provocative 1959 guide from the Houston Police Department still rings true today. Here's what NOT to do if you want to raise responsible children.
The Original Guide (What NOT to Do)
1. Begin in infancy to give the child everything he wants
2. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him
3. Never give him any spiritual training
4. Avoid use of the word "wrong"
5. Pick up everything he leaves lying around
6. Let him read any printed matter he can get his hands on
7. Quarrel frequently in the presence of your children
8. Give a child all the spending money he wants
9. Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort
10. Take his part against neighbors, teachers, and policemen
11. When he gets into real trouble, apologize by saying "I never could do anything with him"
12. Prepare for a life of grief, you will be apt to have it
Why This Still Matters
These points highlight the importance of boundaries, accountability, and consistent parenting in raising responsible children.
The goal isn't to raise a juvenile delinquent—it's to raise a responsible, capable adult.
