Grief & Loss Counseling in Dunwoody
with Summer Huni, APC, M.Ed
Grief is love with nowhere to go. Whether you're mourning the death of a loved one, processing the end of a relationship, or grieving dreams that didn't come to pass, loss touches the deepest parts of who we are. In a culture that often rushes past pain, you deserve support that honors your grief process and helps you find meaning in your journey. I'm Summer Huni, and I provide compassionate grief counseling for individuals and families throughout Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, and Marietta.
Understanding Grief as a Natural Process
Grief isn't a problem to solve or get over quickly. It's a natural response to loss that deserves patience, understanding, and space. My approach honors your unique grief process while providing tools for navigating the waves of emotion that come with significant loss.
Grief doesn't follow a script. Some days the weight of it is everywhere. Other days you feel something like normal, and then feel guilty about that. There's no right way to grieve, and there's no timeline you're supposed to be keeping up with.
What We Work On Together
In grief counseling, we create space for whatever you're actually carrying. That might be sadness, anger, numbness, relief, or all of them at once. We'll work on processing the loss without rushing it, finding language for things that feel impossible to put into words, navigating relationships and responsibilities while you're grieving, and eventually integrating the loss in a way that lets the rest of your life keep moving.
I draw on body-centered approaches — including somatic therapy and Internal Family Systems — because grief isn't only emotional. It lives in the body, and sometimes the most important work happens below the level of words.
Grief Beyond Death
Grief counseling isn't only for bereavement. Many clients come in grieving the end of a marriage or relationship, a career that didn't work out, a health diagnosis that changed what was possible, a move that severed community ties, or a version of themselves they've had to let go. All of these losses are real and all of them deserve support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too soon — or too late — to start grief counseling?
There's no wrong time. Some people come in right after a loss and need a place to process the acute pain. Others come in months or years later when they realize they never really moved through it. Wherever you are in the process, there's something we can do together.
What if I'm not sure I'm grieving — I just feel off?
That's often exactly what grief looks like. Disconnection, low motivation, irritability, or a sense that something important is missing — these can all be signs of unprocessed loss. We'll figure out together what's happening and what would help.
Can grief counseling help with complicated or prolonged grief?
Yes. Complicated grief — where the loss feels as raw months or years later as it did at the beginning — responds well to trauma-informed approaches. Brainspotting and somatic therapy are particularly effective when standard grief processing hasn't been enough.
Grief is a journey you don't have to walk alone. Contact Summer for support that honors your loss and guides you toward healing.
